Editorial : Fiercer political struggle ahead
文章日期:2020年7月16日

【明報專訊】POLITICAL STRUGGLE in Hong Kong has entered a new stage following the enactment of the national security law for the city. Now the focus is on the Legco elections in September. On the one hand, the SAR government has questioned whether the pan-democratic primaries are in violation of the national security law and other statutes, and the central government has voiced its support for the SAR government's investigation in accordance with the law. On the other hand, around 600,000 people voted in the primaries, a high turnout that was beyond expectations. Antagonism between the central government and the democratic camp is getting increasingly acute, and political tensions have kept rising. Presumably bitter political battles will ensue around the time of Legco elections. To a certain extent, the primary results signal that the pan-democrats' political map has been redrawn after the anti-amendment storm. The new generation of localists have made forays into the political arena. As for traditional pan-democratic parties, except for those who have played a relatively prominent role in the anti-amendment storm, a number of incumbent and former lawmakers from the camp did unsatisfactorily in the primaries. Radicalism holds sway, and moderates have been defeated one after another. Political struggle will turn fiercer in Hong Kong for some time to come.
