Editorial : Postpone the amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance
文章日期:2019年5月31日

【明報專訊】THE controversy over the amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance has intensified. The government emphasises that it will do its best to explain the amendment to all sectors of society. However, it is doubtful whether such explanations are sufficient to dispel public doubts. The amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance touches on the confidence and trust of Hong Kong people. It is exactly the same kind of worry harboured by Hong Kong people in the early 1980s over the future of Hong Kong. It is not a problem government officials can resolve simply by talking and explaining. The government's belief that it can inspire public confidence simply by introducing piecemeal changes to the bill is wishful thinking. The social atmosphere and the public sentiment now can be said to be restless and agitated. If the government forces through the bill, it could have serious repercussions. The government should adopt a two‑step approach by first handling the Taiwan murder case and postponing the discussion on the amendment of the law. The government must think twice before deciding on whether to continue to push for the amendment of the law.
