Write on... ON BEING A DOG

【明報專訊】Suppose I'm a dog. And being one, imagine that I'm a cute and fuzzy thing with a distinctive name given to me by my proud owners. I might go forth into the world with a name like Sweetie Pie or Sha-Sha. Or how about Bluebelle or Muffin? If I were a big fellow with a strong back, proud ears and a distinctive tail, I'd probably be known as Lucifer or Maxwell. I've come across a number of dogs living with people who think large thoughts, people who read books and they usually have big dogs with big names that fairly burst in your mouth. Names like Throckmorton, Napoleon or Brewster. All it takes is a stroll in the park on a sunny day to bump into most of those fellows, but big or small, and no matter the breed, under that fur they're just like humans, each one possessing a distinctive personality of its own. Some will be cute as powder puffs, and I can tell you here and now that those are the ones that are routinely taken to a beauty shop to have their coats trimmed, their teeth brushed, and their toenails treated.
