【明報專訊】PHILIPPINE OFFICIALS have given out that China is considering lifting restrictions on taking in Philippine domestic helpers (PDHs). Though the news has yet to be verified, there is already much talk about it in Hong Kong. Many say the mainland wants to vie with Hong Kong for PDHs. Whether the mainland authorities will soon carry out the policy of taking in PDHs, it will become normal for China's purchasing power to be much greater than it is in all parts of the globe as its economy strengthens. What Hong Kong should worry about is not PDH supply but whether it can bring in capable people from other parts of the world and retain them. That is a factor of competitiveness Hong Kong desperately needs to sustain its development.
