【明報專訊】The notorious Death Railway is 3 km north of Kanchanaburi (北碧), Thailand. It is three hours' drive from Bangkok. Why is it called the Death Railway? It was constructed by POWs working for the Japanese in hellish conditions during World War II. About 16,000 POWs and 90,000 Asian workers died during the construction. The structure in the area best-known to most visitors is the the bridge over the Khwae Yai River, or River Kwai (桂河橋). This iron bridge has appeared in some famous movies and novels. The bridge is still in use. You can cross it on foot and walk along the railway or take the train at stations near River Kwai.
