【明報專訊】SOME POLICE OFFICERS wrongfully arrested an intellectually disabled man and charged him with manslaughter. Yesterday in an RTHK phone-in programme New Territories South regional commander Nelson Lui offered an explanation over the phone. That was the first time a high-ranking police officer had faced the public about the incident since it had happened. That was of positive significance. By saying what he said, Lui as good as acknowledged police officers had erred in dealing with the case, though he was too niggardly to offer the man and his family an apology. The rights and wrongs of the case are quite clear. It is indeed unwise to allow such a case to ferment instead of decisively disposing of it. The police finally took the other half step late last night. They apologised to the man. Had they not done so, the situation might have worsened, and they might have been plunged into even greater passivity.
