When Deserts Xuan (張懸), the well-loved Taiwanese singer known for her outspokenness, greeted the Clockenflap audience with a supportive message for the recent democratic movement in Hong Kong, she won keen applause from the crowd. On the other side of the city, students decided to besiege (包圍) the Government Headquarters at Admiralty, resulting in the largest-scale police violence and arrest since the Occupy movement began. Xuan's mesmerising singing became curious background music for the worrying images that started to spam my Facebook newsfeed. There I was in the audience, unable to collect my thoughts over the fast-changing social situation.
