【明報專訊】BEFORE the premiere of The Dream of the Red Chamber, co-produced by the Hong Kong Ballet and Germany's Ballett Dortmund, an eight-minute part on the Cultural Revolution was cut from the performance at the rehearsal stage. And after the premiere, a 12-minute part was also cut from the performance. In this part, the dancer playing Jia Baoyu, heartbroken after Lin Daiyu's death, dances alone on the stage, facing a red wall on which are projected historical scenes illustrative of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Republic of China, the Cultural Revolution, and, finally, contemporary China. This is meant to show that, while time changes, love remains unchanged. The Cultural Revolution scene features dancers dressed as Red Guards, waving copies of Quotations from Chairman Mao and cheering heartily.
