【明報專訊】THE GOVERNMENT'S proposal to expand landfills has run on the rocks in the legislative chamber. Residents are against it not only out of their NIMBY (not in my back yard) mentality. A chief objection is that the government has been slow to introduce source reduction. It is a stopgap measure rather than a permanent solution to expand landfills. The government should seize the opportunity to resolve to carry out source reduction and waste charging measures as soon as possible. Only if society mends its ways and tries hard to minimise waste will it make sense to talk about expanding landfills and building incinerators.
