【明報專訊】LAST week a traffic accident involving a collision between an ambulance and a motorbike resulted in one death and one injury. After the Fire Services Department (FSD) and the police digitalised their communication systems, the media no longer has instant access to information on unforeseen incidents, and last week's accident has highlighted the irrationality of the present mechanism for disseminating such information to the media. The police did not inform the media of the accident until 82 minutes later. The media was therefore unable to detect any negligence of duty that may have been involved in the accident. Consequently, the police and FSD, who are now their own judges, have come under the suspicion of trying to shield each other from blame.
