【明報專訊】HENRY TANG announced he would run for Chief Executive (CE) the day before yesterday, and Leung Chun-ying, yesterday. Tang intended to make his announcement in Sham Shui Po, but he suddenly decided to do so in Admiralty. There was confusion. Leung's announcement was better organised. Slogans were yelled, he talked about his ideas, and the parade of his supporters on stage was well planned. Leung won the announcement round. However, that was just the first round of the CE race. In the next few months, we will closely watch how the two will forge consensus and formulate their election platforms. We hope both will propose policies and tell citizens how they will address themselves to public concerns. Though few Hong Kong people have the vote in the CE selection, public opinion is not to be trifled with. Beijing and the 1,200 Election Committee members must not take citizens' wishes lightly, still less ignore them.
