【明報專訊】Berlinale was founded in 1951 by Dr Alfred Bau, a movie historian. It has been held annually in February since 1978.

In 1988, the Golden Bear (Best Film Award) went to Red Sorghum (《紅高粱》), whose director was Zhang Yimou (張藝謀, above). It was the first Chinese motion picture to receive the title. Starring well-known actor Jiang Wen (姜文) and actress Gong Li (鞏俐), the movie is an adaptation of a novel with the same title by Mo Yan (莫言). Subsequently, Chinese movies The Wedding Banquet (《喜宴》) and Tuya's Marriage (《圖雅的婚事》) won the same award in 1993 and 2007 respectively.
