【明報專訊】THE meeting that took place yesterday between central government officials and Democrats is of great significance in that it has opened a new chapter in Hong Kong politics. It is called an "ice-breaking meeting". However, as the democrats have been estranged from the central authorities for twenty-one years and constitutional arrangements are intricate, it is impossible to have all the issues settled at one meeting. Nevertheless, its good success would decisively help shape Hong Kong's sensible, pragmatic political ecology. As matters stand, it depends on the central government's pleasure whether it will prove successful. The ball is in its court.
