【明報專訊】HONG KONG is similar to Singapore in area and population, and they both started building public housing at more or less the same time in the 1960s and 1970s. However, while flats fetch sky-high prices everywhere in Hong Kong now, and Hong Kong people must pay dearly for their homes, 80% of Singaporeans live in government-built HDB (Housing and Development Board) flats. In Singapore, the per-capita living space is bigger, and property prices are lower. According to the findings of a survey released last week, now a much higher percentage of Hong Kong people support using radical means to pressure the government. We believe that is the case party because many a citizen must toil for much of his life to pay for his very small flat. We need not copy exactly what Singapore does. However, Hong Kong must rethink its housing policy.
