文章日期:2010年4月7日

【明報專訊】AS this issue of our newspaper went to print, 115 of the 153 miners trapped in Wangjialing Coal Mine in Linfen, Shanxi, had been rescued. Though it is not known whether the remaining 38 would survive, this is, as Director of the State Administration of Work Safety Luo Lin has said, all in all a miracle in China's search-and-rescue history. However, though most of the miners have luckily come out of danger, if one gets to the bottom of the matter, one may say there is no cause for celebration. Miracles are fortuitous. If it remains essentially true that mining accidents are bound to happen, how many miracles can we wish would happen in which our miserable miners could be saved?
