Xinjiang Authorities Stand Facts on Their Heads

【明報專訊】LAST Friday in Urumqi, Xinjiang, some armed police officers roughened up three Hong Kong journalists covering a demonstration there. The officers pointed their guns at them, punched them, kicked them, tied their wrists behind their backs and had them kneel by the roadside. They were detained for three hours. They were freed only after the police seized some of their footage. Yesterday, Xinjiang Information Office director Hou Hanmin said a serious investigation showed some trailed protesters with their cameras and gesticulated to them, adding that they were suspected of "inciting a disturbance". The reporters had left Urumqi before the Xinjiang authorities' "investigation" began. Their so-called investigation report calls a stag a horse, turns things upside down and puts wrong on wrong. Not only is it shocking, but it also sends chills down the spines of Hong Kong journalists who often gather news on the mainland. Premier Wen Jiabao is always affable to reporters. What the Xinjiang authorities have done is poles apart from the image he projects.
