Mona's Musings:The God of the Cinema

【明報專訊】Japanese veteran director YAMADA Yoji (山田洋次)celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Shochiku film studios (松竹映畫) with the long-awaited movie ''It's a Flickering Life'' (or ''The God of the Cinema'' in Japanese, which I find more appropriate in the context). Starring SAWADA Kenji (澤田研二) in place of the late comedian SHIMURA Ken (志村健)who died of COVID-19, the film follows Goh Murayama's lost dream in movie-making. First appearing as a cantankerous 78-year-old, Murayama spends his days drinking and gambling. After receiving a visit from a loan shark, his wife and daughter issued an ultimatum for him to patch himself together. Disheartened, Murayama takes refuge in a repertory cinema run by his old friend Terashin, where he watches a vintage movie they worked on as young men. As the camera closes up on the lead actress' pupils, we see the reflection of the younger Goh behind the camera. The movie then zooms into an extended flashback.
