In the forest, one could not go to the butcher's shop in the shopping mall. There were no shopping malls or butcher's shops. Laura's father had to hunt all of their fresh meat. However last night he came home without any meat. Laura was surprised. Her father took Laura on his knee, while Mary sat nearby in her chair. And their father said, "Now I'll tell you why you had no fresh meat to eat today."
"I was sitting up in the oak tree near my deer lick. After awhile a big bear came walking slowly out of the forest into the open area. He was so fat that he was nearly as large as two bears. He must have been eating lots of berries and roots and grubs1 all summer. His head moved from side to side as he walked on all fours (all four legs). He walked across the clear open space in the moonlight, until he came to a rotten log. He smelled it and listened. Then he broke it apart and sniffed among the broken pieces, eating up the fat white grubs, which looked like big worms.
Then he stood up on his back legs, perfectly still, looking all around him. He seemed to think that something was wrong. He was trying to see or smell me.
He was a perfect animal to shoot at, but I was interested in watching him. The forest was so peaceful in the moonlight that I forgot all about my gun. I didn't even think of shooting him, until he was walking away into the forest.
'This is no good,' I thought. 'I'll never get any meat this way.'
I settled myself in the tree and waited again. I was angry with myself. This time I must shoot the next animal I saw. My wife and my little girls were waiting for me to shoot a deer and bring home some good fresh meat to eat."
Footnote:
1. A grub is a young insect larva, which looks something like a worm. It is also a slang word for food.
