There were no grocery stores in the forest. There were only trees and the wild animals who had their homes among them. Wolves lived in the Big Woods, and bears, and deer walked everywhere. Laura's family grew or hunted all their food. Her father sold furs to buy anything that they couldn't make. They ate a lot of venison. Deer meat is called venison. Laura liked the bears; they were very tasty.
One night her father said that he would go to his deer-lick and watch for a deer. They did not get meat to eat all year long, like we do in Hong Kong. There had been no fresh meat in their little house since spring, because then the baby animals were too young to eat. Now that summer was over, her father would go hunting for meat again. The fawns, which are what baby deer are called, were grown up now; so her father would go hunting again.
Her father had made a deer-lick, in an open place in the forest. There were trees nearby in which he could sit to watch the deer-lick. A deer-lick was a place where the deer came to get salt. When they found a salty place on the ground they came there to lick it, with their tongues. That was why it was called a deer-lick. Her father had made one by sprinkling salt over the ground.
Usually after supper, her father would tell them stories or sing songs. However tonight, after supper her father took his gun and went into the forest. Laura and Mary went to sleep without any stories or music.
After her father shot a deer he would hang it in a tree outside the house, so that the wolves would not get the meat. As soon as they woke up in the morning they ran to the window, but there was no deer hanging in the trees. Her father had never before gone out to get a deer and come home without one! Laura and Mary did not know what to think.
