【明報專訊】The SAR government is seeking to implement the first phase of reopening its borders with the mainland on Sunday, and the arrangements will be disclosed today (4 January) at the earliest. While the daily quota for travellers is undoubtedly a focus of discussion, whether the related supporting measures and preparations have been made is also a point of concern. As Hong Kong reopens its borders with the mainland, the pandemic in the city will inevitably worsen. The authorities need to have a comprehensive plan to ensure that the healthcare system can afford the burden. As the Lunar New Year approaches, the flow of people into and out of the city will reach a three-year high. Recently, one after another, some countries have required travellers from Hong Kong to present proof of negative nucleic acid (PCR) test results before boarding flights. As for the early stages of border reopening between Hong Kong and the mainland, it is also expected that cross-border travellers will have to show proof of negative test results. The demand for PCR testing in Hong Kong is likely to increase significantly. The SAR government must ensure that virus testing and laboratory services can meet the demand and serious bottlenecks will not occur.
