The wonderful machine that came to the farm was an eight-horsepower thresher. Eight horses pulled to make it go. The machine separated the wheat straw from the seeds. A man sat on top of the thresher and yelled at the horses. They began to walk in a circle, pulling on the long stick to which they were tied. The two men were working fast, making a new pile of straw. (Straw is the dried wheat plants, without the wheat). One man was working fast, putting the wheat into bags. The wheat grains poured out of the separator into a basket. When the basket was filled the man put an empty one into its place and emptied the full one into a large bag. He had just enough time to empty it, and put it back beside the separator, before the other basket was filled.
All the men were working as fast as they possibly could, but the machine kept right up with them. Laura and Mary were so excited they could hardly breathe. They held hands tightly and stared.
The horses walked around and around. The man who was driving them cracked his whip and shouted at the horses, "Giddap there, John! Work harder!" Crack! went the whip. "Careful there, Billy! Easy, boy! Don't go so fast."
The separator swallowed the wheat plants, the golden straw blew out in a golden cloud, the wheat streamed golden-brown out the side, while the men hurried. Her father and Uncle Henry threw the wheat down onto the board as fast as they could. Dust blew over everything.
Laura and Mary watched the threshing machine as long as they could. Then they ran back to the house to help their mother get dinner ready for all those men.
