Their father told them that the big machine was called the separator and the rod was called the tumbling rod. The little machine was called the horsepower. Eight horses were tied to it and made it go around. Since there were eight horses tied to it, this was an eight-horsepower machine.
A man sat on top of the horsepower and when everything was ready he yelled at the horses. They began to walk. They walked around him in a circle, pulling on the long stick to which they were tied. As they went around, they stepped carefully over the tumbling rod, which was turning over and over on the ground.[click to see a picture of a threshing machine and some horses]
The horses pulled on the machine. The pulling made the tumbling rod keep rolling and the rod moved the machinery of the separator, which stood beside the pile of wheat plants.
All this machinery made an enormous noisy racket, rackety-banging and clanging. Laura and Mary held tight to each other's hand, at the edge of the field and watched. They had never seen a machine before. They had never heard such a noisy racket.
Their father and Uncle Henry were on top of the pile of wheat plants, they were throwing the wheat down on to a board. A man stood on the board and put the wheat plants into a hole at the end of the separator.
The hole looked like the separator's mouth, and it had long, iron teeth. The teeth were chewing. They chewed the bundles and the separator swallowed them. The wheat plants, called straw, blew out at the separator's back, and wheat poured out of its side. The separator took in the wheat plant, with the wheat still on it and separated it into straw and grain.
