Autumn was great fun. There was so much work to do, so many good things to eat, so many new things to see. Laura was running and talking, like the squirrels, from morning to night.
This autumn was special because the threshers would come. In the field her father, Uncle Henry, Grandfather and Mr. Peterson had put all their wheat in a great big pile. Only the wheat grain (seed) is made into bread, not the rest of the plant. When the wheat has grown the wheat grain must be taken off of the wheat plant; this is called threshing. Threshing wheat is a lot of work.
One cold autumn morning, a machine came up the road. Four horses were pulling it and two men were on it. The horses took it into the field. Two more men drove after it with another smaller machine and four more horses.
Her father told her mother that the threshers had come; then he hurried out to the field with his horses. Laura wanted to find out what threshers were and what the machine did. Laura and Mary asked their mother if they could watch. Then they ran out to the field after him. They could watch if they were careful not to get in the way.
Uncle Henry rode up and tied his horse to a tree. Then he and her father tied all the other horses, eight of them, to the smaller machine. They tied each team of four horses to the end of a long stick that came out of the centre of the machine. A long iron rod lay along the ground, from this machine to the big machine. Afterwards Laura and Mary asked many questions. (Asking many questions makes one smart.) Their father told them all about the new machine that would separate the wheat from the wheat plant.
