They were making hats. Her father brought oat straw to the house. Her mother put the straw in water, to soften. Then she braided it. It was like braiding a girl's hair into a pigtail.
When all the straws were braided, she threaded a needle with strong white thread and beginning at the end of a braid she sewed it round and round, holding the braid so it would lie flat after it was sewed. This made a little piece of straw cloth, and her mother said it was the top of a hat.
Then she held the braid tighter on one edge, and kept on sewing it around and around. The braid drew in and made the sides of the hat. When the hat was high enough, her mother held the braid loosely again as she kept on sewing around. Then the braid lay flat and that was the hat's brim or edge.
When the brim was wide enough, her mother cut the braid and sewed the end strongly so that it could not unbraid itself and come loose. If it came loose that would ruin the straw hat.
Their mother was sewing hats for Mary and Laura of the best, narrowest braid. For her father and for herself she made hats of the wider, notched braid. That was her father's Sunday hat. Then she made him two everyday hats of the coarser, wider braid.
When she finished a hat, her mother set it on a board to dry, shaping it nicely as she did so, and when it dried it stayed in the shape she gave it.
Her mother could make beautiful hats. Laura liked to watch her, and she learned how to braid the straw and made a little hat for her doll, Charlotte.
