【明報專訊】The quest for modernisation has been a core topic throughout the history of modern China. After a more than a century long "marathon of modernisation" full of twists and turns, the hope of reaching the goal is finally in sight. The nation has set the target of building a great modern socialist country in all respects by the middle of the century. In the report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), it is proposed to achieve the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation via a "Chinese path to modernisation". Its connotation is no longer limited to material prosperity, military might and advanced technology; it also includes a cultural-ethical dimension underlying the so-called "creation of a new form of human civilisation". What it pursues is a world of pluralistic civilisations that could surmount the shortcomings of capitalism and be compatible with different modes of modernisation. A world of idealism and cosmopolitanism, which is different from the present world dominated by the West. But of course, the specific policies and measures must be realistic and feasible to avoid overdoing things and dogmatism.
