Now it was harvest season, or autumn, in the forest. Laura's father had grown good food on their forest farm all summer. Now they must harvest it and bring it into the house to eat when winter comes.
Her father and her Uncle Henry helped each other. The grain was ripe in the fields. (Wheat, oats, barley and rice are all grains; but Laura's father did not grow rice.) When Uncle Henry came to work with her father, Aunt Polly and all the cousins came to spend the day. They brought the wheat in from the field so that it could be used to make flour. They brought the oats in from the field so it could be used to make oatmeal. Some of the grain and the plant the grain grows on would be used to feed the horses. Then after the harvest was finished on their farm, her father went to help Uncle Henry cut, or harvest, his grain. Her mother took Laura, as well as her sisters Mary and Carrie to spend the day with Aunt Polly.
Her mother and Aunt Polly worked in the house. All the cousins played together in the yard, near the house, until dinner time. Aunt Polly's yard was a fine place to play, because there were so many tree stumps. (A tree stump is the bottom of a tree that has been cut down.) The cousins played jumping from tree stump to tree stump without ever touching the ground. 
Even Laura, who was the littlest, could do this easily in the places where the smallest trees had grown close together. Cousin Charley was a big boy, almost eleven years old, and he could jump from tree stump to tree stump all over the yard. The smaller tree stumps he could jump two at a time and he could walk on top of the fence without being afraid.
