John Larrysson's Column: Summer Story Chapter 10 Part 9 Honey Tree
The Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder
文章日期:2022年8月19日

One evening her father said, "I'm going over to Henry's tomorrow morning, Caroline, to borrow his hoe." A hoe is used to dig small unwanted plants out of the dirt. "Those young trees are getting waist-high around the wheat-field. A man has to keep working at it, or the forest will grow back in my field."

Early next morning he started to walk to Uncle Henry's. But before long he came hurrying back, hitched the horses to the wagon, threw in his axe, the two washtubs, the wash-boiler (big bucket for washing clothes) and all the pails and wooden buckets there were.

"I don't know if I'll need them all, Caroline," he said, "but I'd hate to want them and not have them.

"Oh, what is it? What is it?" Laura asked, jumping up and down with excitement.

"Your father's found a bee tree," her mother said. "Maybe he'll bring us some honey."

“What is a bee tree?" Laura asked.

“It is a tree that bees live in and they make honey.” her mother said.

It was noon before her father came driving home. Laura had been watching for him, and she ran out to the wagon as soon as it stopped by the barnyard. But she was too short and could not see into it.

Her father called, "Caroline, if you'll come and take this pail of honey, I'll go unhitch the horses."

Her mother came out to the wagon, disappointed. She said, "Well, Charles, even a pail of honey is something." Then she looked into the wagon and threw up her hands. Her father laughed.

All the pails and buckets were heaping full of dripping, golden honeycomb. Both tubs were piled full, and so was the wash-boiler.

Her father and her mother went back and forth, carrying the two loaded tubs and the wash-boiler and all the buckets and pails into the house. Her mother heaped a plate high with the golden pieces, and covered all the rest neatly with cloths.

For dinner they had as much of the delicious honey as they could eat, and her father told them how he found the bee tree.
