【明報專訊】THE 14th National Games of China officially opens today (September 15), but some events have already taken place. In the track cycling event, the Hong Kong team has won three medals. As a veteran who has participated in the Games four times, Sarah Lee Wai-Sze continues to be in great form after winning a bronze in the Tokyo Olympics, as she has picked up one gold and one bronze in the National Games. Nicknamed "Cycling Goddess of Ngau Tau Kok Lower Estate", Sarah Lee has taken part in various competitions representing Hong Kong over the years, pulling off one legendary feat after another. It is believed that most citizens are happy to see her continue to fight for glory for Hong Kong, at the same time hoping that more new blood will emerge and take the batons. Given the decent performance of young Hong Kong cyclists in this year's National Games, the future is promising. China is a sporting power, and competition is intense in the National Games. The standards are high in many events. Hong Kong athletes have actively participated in the past seven National Games, achieving better and better results overall. That the government has arranged for the Games to be broadcast on TV can not only make the public feel more involved in the Games (thus boosting the morale of Hong Kong athletes), but also continue the sporting craze in recent months. The next National Games will be held in the Greater Bay Area. The Hong Kong government should draw lessons from the Games this year and make early preparations.
