【明報專訊】A jury at the High Court has unanimously found a doctor guilty of manslaughter over a case in which a Latin dance instructor died after undergoing a liposuction operation. The court has heard how the defendant seriously neglected and breached her duties as a doctor. What was even more shocking were the details revealed — a botched operation, an operation consent form that was sloppy and substandard, and the use of staff without proper qualifications — including one receptionist — as the four ''assistants''. Only one of the four was a qualified clinic assistant and had a first-aid certificate. One assistant even told the court that the company's consultant had asked her to conceal in her testimony the fact that the doctor concerned had left the operation room. Serious incidents have repeatedly occurred amid the growing popularity of aesthetic medicine as a result of the government's inadequate regulation. If the government continues to bow to the industry's pressure, avoid difficult tasks and just muddle along, there will only be more tragedies to come.
