Editorial : China needs an Afghanistan that remains politically stable in the long run
文章日期:2021年8月24日

【明報專訊】Afghanistan has changed hands in a rapid succession of events. As the Taliban have taken Kabul, the Western world is concerned about whether the evacuation of their nationals can proceed in a timely and orderly manner. This will depend on whether the new government formed by the Taliban is as tolerant as it has claimed. While there are similarities between China's concern over Afghanistan and that of Western countries, China also sees the situation from a distinct perspective. For Afghanistan is adjacent to China, and the Taliban used to have close relations with extreme terrorist organisations, greatly impacting on the stability of Xinjiang. It is believed that China will support the new Afghan government, but will not invest in or aid the country on an ambitious scale. After all, it needs to see whether the Taliban can talk the talk and walk the walk by building an Afghanistan of long-term stability.
