Editorial:Biden's push at G7 to contain China
文章日期:2021年6月16日

【明報專訊】US President Joe Biden is visiting Europe in a bid to rope in the US's allies to contain China. Just after the Group of Seven (G7) summit drew to a close, the NATO summit was convened. It is Biden's first overseas trip since assuming office. With the leaders getting along so well, the atmosphere of this year's G7 summit was worlds apart from those during Donald Trump's presidency. But that does not mean there are no conflicts between Europe and the US. The fact that the G7 summit communiqué focuses on China in full accordance with the agenda set by the US attests to the White House's wish to contain China. However, the wording in the communiqué differs crucially from the US's attitude, a reflection that Europe has its own will and calculation of interests. While Germany and France are happy to see that ''America is back'', they do not want to turn the G7 into a club against China.
