Editorial:Freeze on CAI is more symbolic than substantive

【明報專訊】Last Thursday the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to freeze the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) officially on the grounds that the Chinese government had imposed countersanctions on EU institutions and lawmakers over the issue of Xinjiang in March. Without doubt the suspension of the CAI will have a certain impact on China-EU relations. However, its ramifications for the trade and economic relations between China and the EU will be symbolic rather than substantive, meaning that there might not be much real harm.
