Editorial : Vaccine hesitancy

【明報專訊】The COVID-19 vaccination plan in Hong Kong has accelerated, but the mood of "vaccine hesitancy" is also on the rise. Within nine days, three people died after vaccination, and some people now want to wait and see. From a scientific point of view, death after vaccination is only a reflection of the sequence of events, which does not mean that there is a causal relationship between them. In places such as Germany and the US, the mortality rate after vaccination generally ranges between 2 and 4 in a population of 100,000 people. It takes more time and data to determine whether the deaths after Sinovac vaccination are normal. Ultimately, experts must be trusted concerning how to deal with the situation. The authorities should not rule out any possibility, and society should not draw conclusions too early. If Sinovac vaccination is stopped suddenly, what should we do if a similar situation also happens to Comirnaty as well? This is a question that needs to be considered. When it comes to promoting COVID-19 vaccination, one of the paradoxes is that the milder the pandemic and the lower the risk of infection, the more people are prone to "vaccine hesitancy". The authorities need to come up with more ways and make better use of incentives to encourage vaccination.
