Editorial:Future of a vaccine rescue remains unclear
文章日期:2021年1月15日

【明報專訊】With the repeated outbreaks of the pandemic in Hong Kong, it is nearly impossible for cases to be brought to zero before the Chinese New Year. Therefore, it is unlikely that social distance measures will be significantly relaxed. Quite the contrary, they could be further tightened. Restricting footfall in shopping malls and cross-family private gatherings could be a tough measure to prevent the pandemic from taking a sharp turn for the worse, but its effects on bringing case numbers to zero need to be determined by more evidence and studies. At the same time, the government should also carefully consider the impacts of the measures on people's livelihood and different industries as well as the practical difficulties in their implementation. As the future of vaccines is still uncertain, the government needs to come up with a practical roadmap for bringing case numbers to zero so that the public can see the hopes of recovery. That will make it relatively easier for the government to appeal to different sectors to endure tougher pandemic control measures.
