Editorial : Souring German-Russian relations are endangering Nord Stream 2 project

【明報專訊】LAST WEEK the diplomatic dispute between Germany and Russia escalated over the suspected poisoning of Alexei Navalny, a Russian dissident. Berlin demanded that Russia supply information in co-operation with the investigation. Moscow summoned the German ambassador and asked Germany to provide evidence in protest at the so-called smear and propaganda campaign. High-ranking government officials in the German government, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, have threatened to suspend the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a collaborative project with Russia, as a sanction on Moscow. This not only means that German-Russian relations have taken a sharp turn for the worse, but there is also a new, full-blown crisis facing EU-Russia relations.
