Chapter 8 Dance at Grandmother & Grandfather's House

Part 5: Made themselves pretty – Dresses

Then Aunt Ruby and Aunt Docia put on their soft wool underwear and their plain underwear and their stiff, starched white underwear with knitted lace all around the decorated edges. (As a boy, I am unable to explain these mysteries of women's underwear from 200 years ago.) And then finally, they put on their beautiful dresses.

Aunt Docia's dress was a sprigged print, dark blue, with sprigs of red flowers and green leaves thick upon it. The basque was buttoned down the front with black buttons which looked so exactly like juicy big blackberries that Laura wanted to taste them. Today people do not wear a basque, but when Laura was young it was a very tightly fitting bra-jacket that went past the waistline and over the hips.

Aunt Ruby's dress had a bright wine-coloured pattern, covered all over with a feathery pattern in lighter wine colour. It was buttoned with gold-coloured buttons and every button had a little castle and a tree on it.

Aunt Docia's pretty white collar was fastened in front with a large round pin, which had a lady's head on it. But Aunt Ruby pinned her collar with a red rose made of wax. She had made it herself, on the head of a darning needle which had a broken eye, so it couldn't be used as a needle any more.

They looked lovely, moving over the floor so smoothly with their large, round skirts. Their little waists rose up tight and slender in the middle and their cheeks were red and their eyes bright, under the dark shining, hair.

Her mother was beautiful, too, in her dark green delaine dress, with the little leaves that looked like strawberries scattered over it. (Delaine is a type of high quality wool from Merino sheep). The skirt was pretty with many folds and on the edges it had knots of dark green ribbon. At her throat was a gold pin. The pin was flat, as long and as wide as Laura's two biggest fingers and it had patterns cut all over it. Her mother looked so rich and fine that Laura was afraid to touch her.
