Editorial:The global race to develop vaccines
文章日期:2020年7月23日

【明報專訊】RESEARCH on vaccines for COVID-19 has taken a jump forward. Several vaccine candidates, separately developed by teams from China, the UK, the US and Germany, have emerged as the frontrunners among over a hundred such studies. Preliminary data shows that these vaccines caused an immune response in clinical trial subjects after they were vaccinated. Severe side effects were not identified, enabling the third stage of clinical trials, a key development. However, this is definitely not guarantee of any success, as it all remains unknown how effective the vaccines will be and whether long-term immunity will be developed in the receiver. Those longing for quick launches of vaccines to stamp out the pandemic are having extravagantly high hopes. Even if the vaccines are successful, it is doubtful whether they could become ''public goods'' and be received by the neediest first.
