Editorial:COVID-19 resurgence in Beijing can happen in HK
文章日期:2020年6月17日

【明報專訊】THE situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Beijing has become unsteady with a spike of about 80 new cases of confirmed local infections over the past few days. All these cases are linked to a wholesale market in the city. The anti-pandemic measures taken by the Beijing authorities have been among the strictest on the mainland. Still, the city has been struck by a new cluster of cases, which reflects how hard it is to guard against the virus. The transmission of the virus has nothing to do with national borders or the political system of a country. What the mainland and South Korea have gone through in their anti-pandemic efforts shows that resoluteness in actions and ''biting the bullet'' are the key factors in whether the pandemic can be brought under control quickly. However, even after the situation has eased, there is still a possibility that it will change for the worse. The risk of having a new wave of outbreaks should not be underestimated. In Hong Kong, although the pandemic seems to have eased in recent months, unexpected clusters of local infections have still come up occasionally. As the risk of community outbreaks can hardly be eradicated, people should maintain an anti-pandemic awareness and never let their guard down.
