Editorial:Helping the disadvantaged is of crucial importance

SINGAPORE had fewer than 1,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 early this month — prior to the onset of the second wave of the outbreak. The figure has now surged past 13,000, with most of the patients being foreign workers. In Europe and the US, a large proportion of patients are elderly people in nursing homes. Prisons all around the globe could be the ''epicentre'' of the next wave of infections. When health authorities announced measures of mandatory mask-wearing and social distancing, they did not pay attention to the disadvantaged who are not protected at all in society and who were unable to comply with social distancing orders. Now it has dawned on these officials that the disadvantaged cannot be ignored if they are to control the pandemic. But they are at their wits' end. People cannot help but ask, ''What does 'survival of the fittest' mean exactly?''
