【明報專訊】ONCE upon a time, and long before my time, Sinclair Lewis was asked to be the Writer-In-Residence at my alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In those days you didn't have to be an English scholar or a student at the university to know that Sinclair Lewis was the first American writer to be awarded, in 1930, the Nobel Prize for Literature. That was quite an achievement then, an American finally winning out over the British in the field of letters. But it would probably take some coaxing today to remember the names of the books that helped to win him that celebrated award.
