文章日期:2019年12月18日

【明報專訊】DURING her duty visit to Beijing, Chief Executive Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor has obtained from the central government a full recognition of her and the SAR government's hard work. Aside from reiterating the principles of ''curbing violence and stopping the unrest'' as well as upholding ''One country, two systems'', both President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang also spoke about the deep-rooted conflicts in Hong Kong society. It is true that the anti-extradition storm was triggered by political controversies. But foreign experts like Richard Bush also support the viewpoint that social and economic inequalities that have accumulated have indeed long sown the seeds of the city's unrest. The Hong Kong government must show its determination to introduce bold and decisive reforms instead of merely relying on ''supportive measures by the central government'' and aiming only to treat the symptoms but not the root cause as it did before. The deep-seated conflicts in Hong Kong society have continued to worsen. They must be faced squarely and handled with more haste. At the same time, there is a widening gap between Beijing and Hong Kong society regarding how they perceive and comprehend ''One country, two systems''. This is another deep-seated conflict in the political sense which also needs to be resolved by all means.
