【明報專訊】My apartment in the south of France was on the top floor of an ancient three-storey building that at one time or another in its long history had looked down upon the visiting presence in the village of the Cardinal — Duc de Richelieu during his exile years in nearby Avignon, or upon the engineering detachment of Napoleon's army when it worked to restore the nearby Roman viaduct that in an earlier century had carried water to Caesar's legions quartered in Nimes. The village is Uzès, and the French refer to the style of the building as architecture de type bourgeoise, meaning something uncommon and a little bit special.
