Editorial:Innocent people endangered by rising violence

【明報專訊】ALL across Hong Kong there is smoke and fire. Roads continue to be blocked following the call for a "general strike on three fronts" (a walkout, class boycotts and boycotts by businesses), and the MTR has again become a target of attacks. Clashes broke out in multiple districts. Of them, the clash on the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has become the focus. Seeing the call for a "general strike" over the past two days has failed to receive a positive response, violent activists resorted to an incessant escalation of violence and disrupting the mass transportation system in a bid to paralyse the city. But such a strategy is no different from holding ordinary citizens to ransom. Petrol bombs were even thrown onto railway tracks in complete disregard of the safety of others. Amid the immense division of Hong Kong society, political stances have taken precedence over everything for many people when they judge the escalating violence by both the police and the protesters. However, "the spectators see the chess game better," as the saying goes. There are already changes in the tide of global opinion, with the rampage of violence in Hong Kong being seen as not quite right. As violent activists continue to step up violence and test the bottom line of society's tolerance, some catastrophes might ensue, affecting innocent people in the end. All parties of society must say no to violence clearly instead of humming and hawing anymore.
