【明報專訊】LAST week a 15-year-old secondary school student from Shanghai was invited to the World Laureates Forum attended by a number of Nobel laureates. The news has caused a sensation on the mainland. Indeed, China has achieved success in nurturing people with scientific talent, and the outlook in this aspect is promising. However, the country still has a system in place that relies on examination-oriented education for the selection of students. Whether such a system is adequate for creative people with talent in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to deal with future challenges from all over the world is cause for concern.
