Editorial : Frank dialogue to reduce polarisation
文章日期:2019年9月23日

【明報專訊】THE GOVERNMENT will hold the first community dialogue next Thursday. Not many people are optimistic about it. Some people are sceptical about the effects it can achieve, while others argue that it will be no more than a public relations exercise. That said, dialogue is always better than resorting to violence. The government should keep trying no matter how hard it is. It is easy to destroy trust but very hard to build it. The storm over the amendment has broken the trust between the government and citizens. The most important function of dialogue is not so much to find the immediate solution to a problem as to build a bridge for communication with a view to reducing misunderstanding and antagonism, rebuilding trust and laying the foundation for the search of a way out.
