Editorial : Prevent violence from becoming the norm
文章日期:2019年7月17日

【明報專訊】THE town centre of Sha Tin was a "battleground" between violent protesters and the police. Scores of police officers and demonstrators were injured and hospitalised. Some of the injured were once in a critical condition while a police officer's finger was bitten off. According to sources from the police, another officer's finger was even crushed with a certain tool. Hong Kong is a society underpinned by the rule of law, and violence must be condemned unequivocally. Otherwise, it will only breed more violence. The anti-extradition storm has been going on for more than a month, but the turbulence has yet to be reversed. Many citizens think the government's response has been inadequate, and are worried that the city is gradually sliding towards the brink of anarchy. Restoring calm and stability in society is in the best interests of Hong Kong at this moment. The SAR government has to act further to address people's demands, completely withdrawing the amendment bill and setting up an independent commission of inquiry. It has to restore calm in society and find a fundamental way to curb violence.
