Editorial﹕Xi-Trump summit: China questioning US's strategic intent
文章日期:2019年6月21日

【明報專訊】CHINESE PRESIDENT Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump had a telephone conversation in which the two leaders agreed to have a meeting at the G20 summit next week. As Trump has just launched his re‑election campaign, he needs some good news to stimulate the stock market. Investors have also put their focus on whether the Sino‑US trade talks will resume. However, if we examine carefully what China has said, we can see that what Beijing wants to talk about most is not concrete issues like the trade war or Huawei, but the "fundamental issues concerning the development of China‑US relations", meaning that it wants Washington to talk turkey and clarify its strategic intent regarding China. The Xi‑Trump summit may become a watershed moment that decides whether the two countries can avoid the Thucydides's Trap and whether the world will face a new cold war.
