Editorial : Silent majority are against amendment
文章日期:2019年6月10日

【明報專訊】THE controversy over the amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance remains intense. Despite the government's proposition of six extra measures for protection in an attempt to address public concern, an opinion poll conducted by the CUHK on behalf of this newspaper shows that there have not been significant changes in public perception of the amendment. The largest proportion of those polled are opposed to the amendment. Not only are supporters of the pan‑democrats and the nativist movement unambiguous in their stance, but the moderates, middle‑of‑the‑roaders and those without any political allegiance also demonstrate a clear stand on the matter. The government should listen to the view of the silent majority of society. It should delay the amendment and give it long and careful thought in order to figure out a plan that can win the approval of the majority of people. If, ultimately, the amendment bill is indeed given a vote, lawmakers should follow their conscience rather than being swayed by their collective political stance or other political forces when casting their votes.
