Editorial : Why amending the ordinance to protect criminals?
文章日期:2019年6月3日

【明報專訊】THE government has unveiled a new proposal for the amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance. The punishment threshold for the transfer of fugitives will be raised, and it is suggested that only the "central authorities" of the region be allowed to request extradition. The government has made this decision after accepting the views of the pro‑establishment camp and the business sector. This might improve the bill's chances of adoption in the Legislative Council. However, the new proposal is still insufficient to address the gravest concerns and misgivings of society, as the measures to protect human rights contained therein will be of doubtful effectiveness.
