Editorial : The need to build transportation infrastructure more proactively
文章日期:2018年10月3日

【明報專訊】THE public consultation on land supply has come to an end. While the results of the opinion survey have not been released officially pending the submission of the Task Force's report late this year, the issue of supporting transportation infrastructure must be resolved regardless of the government's choice among the 18 land supply options. As land in Hong Kong's urban areas is limited, any large-scale building plan must be located in a newly-developed region. There is no doubt that most of the land supply options must be supported by a good transportation system. What is regrettable, however, is that some political parties, politicians and stakeholders, acting out of self-interest, have exploited the issue of transportation as a pretext for opposing specific options. The government should indeed have a comprehensive plan for transportation when looking for land to put up housing so as to avoid affecting nearby residents. That said, transportation is always a technical problem that can be resolved. It should not be used as an excuse for opposing a specific option.
